The Pie Card

The Monthly Newsletter of Division 8

In 2026, Division 8 celebrates its 60th anniversary since its founding in 1966. No one seems to remember who or when our newsletter was named The Pie Card. But it was a long time ago.

If you scroll down this page, below you will find links to copies of The Pie Card as far back as 2006. In those days, The Pie Card was mailed to members.

What is a Pie Card? In railroading, a Pie Card is a bit of historic slang that essentially refers to a meal ticket or a credit card for food. It was issued to railroad workers, often itinerant workers who moved from one railroad to another, that allowed them to eat at company-approved restaurants. The cost of the meals would then be deducted from their future wages. In the early 20th century, having a “full Pie Card” was a sign of security, while being “without a Pie Card” meant a railroader was likely down on their luck or riding the rails without official employment.

Whether you are a Division 8 member or simply interested, exploring the historical links below can be a truly enjoyable experience. Discover the rich history waiting for you!
